The decapitated bodies of at least 25 men and two women have been found near Guatemala's border with Mexico.
The bodies were discovered on a ranch in Peten province, 500km (310 miles) north of the capital.
Police said the killings could be linked to a battle between drug gangs fighting for control of the area.
Mexican cartels are increasingly moving into northern Guatemala, an important transit point for drugs smuggled from South America to the US.
"This is the worst massacre we have seen in modern times," police spokesman Donald Gonzalez told Reuters.

Man beheads woman in Spanish supermarket
Wow, the freaks really are everywhere, Crazy ass Bulgarian man suffering from SJS in spain?
What was he going to do with the womans head if he had gotten away? Sicko.
Herald sun
A MAN has randomly attacked and beheaded a woman in a supermarket on the Spanish resort island of Tenerife, officials say.
The suspect, believed to be a homeless Bulgarian man with a police record, was detained by security guards after he ran out of the supermarket with the blood-soaked head in his hands.
A witness told broadcaster Cadena Ser that he saw the man drop the woman's head on the pavement after coming out of the store.
"I parked my car and saw a man running out with something bloody in his hands and a security guard chasing him. He threw it to the ground, it almost hit me and what he had been carrying was a woman's head," the unnamed witness said in a radio interview.
Regional Interior Ministry delegate Dominica Fernandez said the suspect is believed to have entered the shop, stolen a knife which he then used to assault and behead the woman, whose identity hasn't been released.

Man Beheads Girlfriend in Front of Classmates at Indian University
O.K. so no one will let us be in love and be married, so I kill you!
A modern day version of Romeo And Juliet?
Foxnews
RANCHI, India -- An engineering student was in police custody Thursday after allegedly slicing his girlfriend's head off with a ceremonial dagger in front of her classmates at an Indian university.
Bijendra Kumar, 23, a diploma student at St. Xavier's College in Ranchi, in eastern India, allegedly beheaded his 18-year-old girlfriend, Khushbu, with a blade known as a "khukri" as she left the classroom with her friends.
The Hindustan Times reported that Kumar was overpowered by students and security guards, beaten and then arrested by police after the attack Wednesday.
Authorities said Khushbu's head was sliced off in the attack. Kumar later told police that he loved his girlfriend and wanted to kill her and himself because her parents would not let them marry.
Kumar's mother, Yamini Devi, was distraught when told of the incident.
"We came to know about his affair with Khushbu two months ago when she ran away from her house and came ... to marry my son," she said. Khushbu's uncle then intervened and beat Kumar for inciting his niece to elope.
"We were in love for the last five years, but our parents did not allow us to unite, so we decided to die together. After killing her, I was about to kill myself when they caught me," Kumar was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

3 headless, tortured bodies found outside Acapulco; 5 shot to death north of Mexican resort
Acapulco , Apparently not such a nice place to vacation anymore , I guess the Cartels need some R&R too.
Foxnews
ACAPULCO, Mexico (AP) — Three headless bodies showing signs of torture were found just outside Acapulco and the bodies of five other men with multiple gunshot wounds were discovered in a car north of the Pacific resort, police said Saturday.
Police in the southwestern state of Guerrero, where Acapulco is located, said the three beheaded men appeared to be in their 20s and 30s, but their identities and a motive had not been determined. They were found on a peninsula a few miles south of Acapulco.
About 50 miles (80 kilometers) north, near the small town of Tecpan de Galeana, police discovered five bodies in a car left on a dirt road about 100 yards (90 meters) off a main highway.
A police report said all five men had been repeatedly shot. Two bodies were in the front of the vehicle and three in the trunk, the report said.
The U.S. State Department warned this week that parts of Guerrero state could be dangerous for travelers due to drug violence.
At the same time, the travel warning noted that Mexican officials make a concerted effort to protect foreign tourists and that "resort areas ... in Mexico do not see the levels of drug-related violence and crime reported in the border region and in areas along major drug trafficking routes."
More than 22,700 people have been killed in drug-related violence since President Felipe Calderon launched an offensive against cartels shortly after taking office in December 2006.

Mexico drug killers dump 6 severed heads by church
The United States, which worries about the growing power of the cartels, says the rising death toll is a sign the drug gangs are weakening under the military crackdown.
HuH? the rising death toll is a sign the drug gangs are weakening ?
I Guess you could look at it that way , But I see it as well as , Many of you Do , that it is a Sign of the drug cartels Being able to get away with whatever they want...Murder , terror , Murder , Drug running , and some murdering !
And notice how Beheading And chopping off of limbs is Becoming the Favorite murdering technique of the Cartels ! Much like the Taliban , Al Shabaab and Al Qaida
....
DURANGO, Mexico (Reuters) - Suspected drug gangs dumped the severed heads of five police officers and a prosecutor outside a church in northern Mexico on Wednesday as killings from the latest cartel violence rose to more than 60 in the past three days.
The heads were left in plastic bags near the church in Durango state before dawn. They were discovered by trash collectors as blood ran out of them onto the street, the state attorney general's office said.
"These six were kidnapped on Monday night and then beheaded," said a spokeswoman for the attorney general's office.
The beheadings appeared to be a revenge attack by the powerful Gulf cartel and its Zeta hitmen for the killing of 10 gang members in Durango by the army last week, police said.
The battle between rival cartels over smuggling routes into the United States has killed more than 60 people across Mexico this week in the latest sign President Felipe Calderon's army-backed crackdown is only provoking more violence.
Drug gang members in Tijuana, across from San Diego, killed more than 20 people in the past 24 hours, chopping up and beheading victims, while drug murders have escalated in Ciudad Juarez on the Texas border. The city has become one of the world's murder capitals this year.
Drug gangs are becoming increasingly brazen despite a 49,000-strong troop presence across Mexico. In Calderon's home state of Michoacan in central Mexico, suspected drug gangs threw grenades near the state government palace on Tuesday, seriously injuring a pregnant woman and a young girl.
"The government has weakened and fragmented some of the major cartels, but in the progress has upset the balance of cartel power," said U.S. security consultancy Stratfor in a report on Wednesday. "The result has been an increase in violence as formerly allied cartels have been pitted against each other in battles of attrition," it added.
More than 16,000 people have been killed in drug violence in Mexico since Calderon launched his drug war in late 2006.
The United States, which worries about the growing power of the cartels, says the rising death toll is a sign the drug gangs are weakening under the military crackdown.
But Mexicans are angry at the army's inability to stop the violence and have called for a withdrawal in some cities.
