The Indian navy captured 61 pirates who jumped into the Arabian Sea to flee a gunfight and fire on the hijacked ship from which they had staged several attacks, a navy statement said Monday.

Two Indian navy ships also rescued 13 crew members from the fishing boat Sunday night, nearly 695 miles (1,100 kilometers) off Kochi in southern India, the statement said.

The pirates had hijacked the Mozambique-flagged Vega 5 in December and had used it as a mother ship — a base from which they staged several attacks in the vast waters between East Africa and India.

A patrol aircraft spotted the mother ship Friday while responding to another vessel reporting a pirate attack, the Indian navy said. The pirates aborted the hijacking attempt and tried to escape in the mother ship.

When the Indian ships closed in Sunday night, the pirates fired on them. The hijacked vessel caught fire when the Indian navy returned fire, the navy said.

The pirates as well as the crew members jumped into the sea from the burning vessel, but were taken out by Indian sailors, the statement said.

U.S. Commandos Capture 4 Suspected Pirates

Anti-piracy officials say U.S. commandos have captured four suspected pirates who boarded a Japanese-owned oil tanker off the coast of Oman.

A statement by the international anti-piracy task force says the 24 crew members on the MV Guanabara took refuge in a protected part of the vessel after reporting they were under attack Saturday.

A special unit from the destroyer USS Bulkeley boarded the tanker Sunday and detained the suspected pirates about 328 nautical miles southeast of Duqm in southern Oman.

(CNN) -- A round-the-world boating adventure ended tragically Tuesday for four Americans, whom pirates fatally shot after capturing their yacht in the Indian Ocean last week, U.S. officials said.

The 58-foot vessel, named the Quest, was being shadowed by the military after pirates took the ship off the coast of Oman on Friday. Officials had said earlier Tuesday it was less than two days from the Somali coast.

Ship owners Jean and Scott Adam and Phyllis Macay and Bob Riggle were found shot after U.S. forces boarded the vessel about 1 a.m. ET, officials said.

The forces responded after a rocket-propelled grenade was fired at a U.S. Navy ship about 600 yards away -- and missed -- and the sound of gunfire could be heard on board the Quest, U.S. Navy Vice Admiral Mark Fox told reporters.

"Despite immediate steps to provide life-saving care, all four hostages ultimately died of their wounds," U.S. Central Command said.

(Reuters) - A Somali man who pleaded guilty for his role in an attack against the USS Ashland warship in April was sentenced on Monday to 30 years in prison, the first sentencing in a U.S. piracy case in more than 150 years.

Jama Idle Ibrahim, 38, was one of six men brought to the United States and charged with the April 10 attack on the USS Ashland, a warship that supports amphibious operations, in the Gulf of Aden. They mistook the ship for a merchant vessel.

"Piracy is a growing threat throughout the world, and today's sentence, along with last week's convictions, demonstrates that the United States will hold modern-day pirates accountable in U.S. courtrooms," said U.S. Attorney Neil MacBride.

Ibrahim in August pleaded guilty to attacking to plunder a vessel, acts of violence against persons on a vessel, and use of a firearm during a crime of violence.

It was the first sentencing in a U.S. court in more than 150 years for acts of piracy, MacBride said...

Last week, a jury in Norfolk, Virginia convicted five men from Somalia on piracy and other related charges for a separate attack on April 1 on the USS Nicholas Navy frigate

A special court to try suspected pirates has opened in the Kenyan port of Mombasa, funded by international donors.

Pirates based in neighbouring Somalia have made the Gulf of Aden one of the world's most dangerous shipping lanes.

Warships from several world powers now patrol the Indian Ocean but there has been confusion about where those arrested should face justice.

Some 100 suspects are in Kenya and 18 pirates have already been convicted.

Earlier this year, Kenya said it would stop prosecuting piracy cases unless other countries agreed to share the "burden".

Several suspected pirates detained by naval patrols on the high seas were released because of a lack of clarity about where and how to prosecute them.

(Reuters) - Somali pirates hijacked a Russian tanker carrying $52 million worth of crude oil and 23 crew on Wednesday, prompting Russia to send a warship to try to deal with the incident, officials said.

Pirates who hijacked the China-bound, Russian-owned MV Moscow University tanker 350 miles off the coast of Yemen warned against any rescue attempt, saying this would endanger the Russian crew.

"A Russian warship is moving toward the tanker," Russian defense ministry spokesman Alexei Kuznetsov said. The Chief of the Russian General Staff cut short a visit to NATO headquarters in Brussels to coordinate the military's response, he added.

The vessel had been traveling under a Liberian flag from Sudan to the Chinese port of Nigbo with 86,000 tonnes of oil owned by Chinese refiner Unipec, a Russian shipping source said. Maritime experts said the tanker had a deadweight of 106,474 tonnes.

"The crew members locked themselves in the radar room. This ship has been hijacked," Commander Rear Admiral Jan Thornqvist of the European Union's Navfor naval force told reporters in the Kenyan port of Mombasa.

One pirate who identified himself as Abdi said the tanker was heading to a pirate haven on the coast of central Somalia.

(Reuters) - A suspected Somali pirate was killed during shooting between pirates and armed guards on board a Panamanian-flagged ship, a maritime official and the EU anti-piracy taskforce said on Wednesday.

The private guards protecting the MV Almezaan returned fire as they beat back two attacks by the same gang off the coast of lawless Somalia on Tuesday.

Somali pirates attacked a Yemeni oil tanker off the Yemen coast on Wednesday, but the Yemeni navy foiled the assault, the defense ministry said.

Navy and coast guard vessels engaged four pirate boats that had surrounded the tanker, which was carrying crude oil to the Yemeni port of Aden, and forced them to flee, a Yemeni Defense Ministry website said.

Marauding sea gangs have attacked ships in the busy lanes in the Gulf of Aden that link Europe and Asia for several years, earning ransoms worth millions of dollars from vessels captured.

In the attack on the MV Almezaan, a patrolling Spanish warship deployed a helicopter that fired warning shots to stop the pirates as they fled the area. Spanish troops seized six individuals, recovered one body and destroyed three pirate vessels.

MOGADISHU (Reuters) - Somali pirates have seized a United Arab Emirates-flagged cargo ship loaded with weapons bound for the anarchic Horn of Africa nation in contravention of a U.N. arms embargo, maritime experts said Monday.

Also Monday, the gunmen launched their longest range hijack attempt yet -- opening fire on a giant Hong Kong-flagged crude oil tanker 1,000 nautical miles east of Mogadishu.

Andrew Mwangura of the East African Seafarers' Assistance Program told Reuters he believed the weapons ship was using a fake name. He said it had been hijacked Sunday and was now held near the northern Somali town of Garacad.

"She is one of the regular weapons carriers circumventing the U.N. arms embargo on Somalia," Mwangura said. Maritime sources say the craft is believed to be carrying light arms and ammunition, as well as rockets and rocket-propelled grenades.

"We understand the weapons belong to the Somali government," Farah, a pirate, told Reuters by satellite telephone.

Another gang member, Hassan, said the weapons ship was well known to them: "It has been circling in our ocean for a long time, bringing illegal weapons to massacre Somalis," he said.

'Shipriders' to fight pirates

This to me is ridiculous ! You would think with the Pirate problem as it is that the countries involved would make an easy exception ! Let the weapons used to fight the pirates stay on board ! Let the Shipriders shoot to kill any pirate They need to , to defend the vessel the are protecting ! The world needs to get back to the days where the bad guys had less rights than the good guys ! How long do you wait before you shoot? It's
just one of many possible dilemmas facing an increasing number of
private security companies who offer armed escorts - known in the
industry as 'shipriders' - from Somali pirates.

But legal problems abound for ships that carry guns. The first
hurdle is making sure the countries where ships embark and disembark
the weapons will allow them to do so - a legal nightmare in corrupt
Middle Eastern ports with terrorism problems.

Then there's the
issue of which law applies onboard the ship if a weapon is discharged:
the shooter's nationality, the law of the country whose flag the ship
is flying, or the territorial waters of the country the ship is in.

In
at least one case, a private security consultant said, an armed team
had rented weapons from the Djibouti government then was forced to drop
them over the side of the ship to avoid illegally importing them into
the country where they were due to disembark.

The consultant asked for anonymity because he did not wish to compromise his business.

MANAMA (Reuters) - Pirates have fired small arms weapons at a U.S. Navy supply ship off the coast of Eastern Somalia, the first attack of this kind since last year's surge in pirate attacks, the U.S. Navy said on Thursday.

The USNS Lewis and Clark was chased for about an hour on Wednesday morning by two pirates skiffs, but neither came closer than about one nautical mile to the U.S. vessel, the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet said in a statement.

The small arms fire fell well short of the U.S. ship which speeded up to evade the skiffs.

The USNS Lewis and Clark earlier served as a temporary detention facility for suspected pirates arrested at sea, but its operations are now limited to providing supplies to other U.S. ships operating in the area.

Somali pirates have increased their activities in recent weeks, defying the presence of international navies in the area.

There have been 97 attempted attacks on merchant vessels in the Gulf of Aden in 2009, 27 of which have been successful, according to the U.S. Navy.

In the latest incident, Somali pirates on Thursday seized a small Dutch vessel with at least eight crew in the Gulf of Aden.

BOSASSO, Somalia (Reuters) - Somali pirates have agreed to release a Yemeni cargo ship, the MV Amani, without ransom, after negotiations between the hijackers, local elders and provincial officials, a minister said on Friday.

"No ransom was paid, but after negotiations, the pirates will get off the ship soon. The Yemeni ship will be released in the coming hours," Ali Abdi Aware, state minister of the northern province of Puntland, told Reuters.

The ship was seized on November 25 in the Gulf of Aden. No other details about the vessel, its crew and cargo were available.

Aware said the Yemeni ambassador to Somalia was also in Puntland to participate in the negotiations to release the ship.

A surge in piracy in the Gulf of Aden has sent foreign warships rushing to the area, but the attacks continue despite the huge presence of international forces.

In a separate development, a Kenyan maritime official said on Sunday that gunmen who captured a Ukrainian ship carrying 33 tanks and other military hardware had reached a deal with its owners to release the vessel.

The pirates and owners of the MV Faina were discussing arrangements for delivering the money, said Andrew Mwangura of the East African Seafarers' Assistance Programme.

The pirates had previously demanded a $20 million ransom.

Somali pirates have taken advantage of chaos on the Somali mainland to launch attacks offshore in a major global sea artery used by about 20,000 vessels a year. The gangs normally seek and often received large ransoms, and it is rare for pirates to release vessels without some monetary incentive.
