Nato says at least 115 insurgents have been killed in ongoing operations in a northeastern Afghan province known for being a hotbed of foreign militant fighters.

The US-led alliance said on Thursday the fighting in rugged Kunar province near the Afghan-Pakistani border has been going on since around October, 15.

Nato says the coalition and its Afghan partners have killed at least 115 insurgents over the past week to 10 days.

It says Nato and Afghan forces have been involved in a ”series of multiple, smaller operations that have a combined, larger impact.”

Bombs in a military base west of Baghdad and outside a restaurant where local police were having breakfast in southern Iraq have killed 28 people, officials and army sources said.

The blast at the army base in Habaniya, near the town of Falluja around (50 miles west of Baghdad, killed 15 soldiers and wounded 20 others on Wednesday, according to army sources who said the bomb was attached to a military bus.

So I guess it would be better to sit back and pick up the pieces of a suicide bomber and his or her victims after the fact instead of say, arresting them before hand ?

Pakistani Police Safely Recover Kidnapped American

Well it was not the Taliban that kidnapped Mr. Weinstein, they would not have found him so quickly.

Using tips from arrested suspects, police on Thursday safely recovered a U.S. development expert who was kidnapped almost two weeks ago in the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore, a senior police official said.

Police traced the whereabouts of Warren Weinstein, 70, to Khushab city, located some 125 miles (200 kilometers) northwest of Lahore, and freed him during an early morning operation, said Lahore police chief Malik Ahmed Raza.

The U.S. Embassy in Islamabad could not immediately confirm that Weinstein had been found.

Well it may not be a big effort by Pakistan but at least they are killing the Taliban when they get the chance.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan -- A pair of U.S. missile strikes hit a vehicle and a compound Wednesday in a tribal region near the Afghan border, killing 23 suspected militants, Pakistani intelligence officials said.

The two missile strikes were the fourth and fifth of the week, and the latest sign that the U.S. has no intention of abandoning the tactic despite public disapproval in Pakistan and a downturn in relations between Islamabad and Washington following the American raid that killed Usama bin Laden.

The strikes occurred within minutes of each other, the four Pakistani intelligence officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to brief the media.

One missile hit a vehicle carrying five men, while the other struck a nearby compound, killing 18 people in the Shawal area, which lies along the border that separates the South and North Waziristan tribal regions.

Both regions are home to myriad militant groups, including several involved in attacks on Western forces across the border in Afghanistan.

The area hit Wednesday was on the North Waziristan side, in territory under the control of Hafiz Gul Bahadur, a warlord involved in the Afghan fight.

North Waziristan is the usual target for U.S. missiles because it is home to more groups fighting in Afghanistan and because the Pakistani military has resisted U.S. appeals to launch an offensive there. But the strikes this week have mostly hit South Waziristan or along the border of the two regions.

Islamabad, Pakistan (CNN) -- A suspected U.S. drone strike in Pakistan's tribal region killed six suspected militants on Wednesday, intelligence officials told CNN.

Two intelligence officials said the suspected drone fired two missiles on a militant hideout in South Waziristan, one of the seven districts of Pakistan's volatile tribal region bordering Afghanistan.

The intelligence officials asked not to be named because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

(AFP)--A bomb blast targeting an Islamic party chief killed at least five people and wounded 20 others in a northwestern Pakistani town Thursday, police said.

The bombing took place in the town of Charsadda close to the convoy of Maulana Fazlur Rehman, leader of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam party.

"At least five people were martyred including a police inspector and 20 others were wounded as the bomb blast hit a police vehicle deployed for security of the convoy," senior police official Nisar Khan Marwat said.

TIKRIT, Iraq — Uniformed attackers driving military trucks and armed with a car bomb, guns, grenades and suicide belts blasted their way into a provincial government headquarters in the northern city of Tikrit on Tuesday, killing at least 53 people in a highly organized raid, according to witnesses and local officials.

Over several hours, the attackers went room to room, tossing grenades down hallways and through doorways and killing local politicians and government workers with shots to the head, according to Iraqi security forces and two witnesses who escaped by jumping out of a second-floor window. More than 90 people were wounded, officials said.

After an hours-long firefight, Iraqi security forces — who called in U.S. helicopters and soldiers for support — entered the building, but there were no survivors inside. The attackers had either been shot or blown themselves up

Blasts at Yemen bullet factory kill at least 110

(Reuters) - A series of blasts at a bullet factory in south Yemen killed at least 110 people on Monday when residents broke in to steal ammunition a day after clashes between militants and the army in the town, doctors said.

Witnesses said the blasts, possibly triggered by a cigarette, caused a massive fire in the factory in the town of Jaar in Abyan province, where al Qaeda militants and mainly leftist southern separatists are active.

"This accident is a true catastrophe, the first of its kind in Abyan," said one doctor at the state-run hospital. "There are so many burned bodies. I can't even describe the situation."

Doctors put the death toll at 110, but said that even arriving at a figure was difficult because the charred remains were difficult to count. They said some victims, including women and children, would be buried in a mass grave.

Scores were wounded, many suffering from burns, doctors said, and many bodies remained inside the factory, which also contained stores of gunpowder.

(Reuters) - Five car bombs went off around Baghdad on Sunday, killing at least six people and wounding 29, security sources said, in a seemingly coordinated series of attacks during a major Shi'ite religious rite.

Four exploded within the Iraqi capital itself. A car bomb in Baghdad's mainly Shi'ite northwestern district of Kadhimiya exploded near a bus carrying Iranian pilgrims, killing one and wounding seven, police and Interior Ministry sources said.

Other car bombs detonated near a hotel in Baghdad's central Abu Nawas street, two police patrols in the southern Ilaam district and in al-Mesbah in central Baghdad, killing three people, including a policeman, and wounding 18, the sources said.

Elsewhere, a car bomb killed two people and wounded four in Taji, 20 km (12 miles) north of Baghdad, an Interior Ministry source said. A police source said it was a roadside bomb.

PESHAWAR: Three people, including two paramilitary soldiers, were killed in a roadside bomb blast in northwest Pakistan’s Orakzai tribal region on Saturday, officials said.

An improvised explosive device planted by militants went off in the town of Ibrahimzai during a routine patrol by paramilitary soldiers, a security official said.

“Two soldiers and one civilian were killed in the blast,” Abdul Qadir, a local administration official, told AFP.

Seven other people — one soldier and six civilians — were wounded in the explosion near the bazaar in Ibrahimzai, he said.

(Reuters) - Pakistani fighter jets bombed a militant position in the Khyber region on the Afghan border on Saturday, killing at least 45 people, a senior member of a militant group in the region said.

The strike was carried out in the remote valley of Tirah, the militant, who declined to be named, told Reuters.

"They first hit a house where our people were present and minutes later, when people got there to remove bodies from the rubble, jets attacked again," the militant said.

He said the dead included both militants and civilians.

A military spokesman confirmed that aircraft bombed militant hideouts in the region but said he had no information about casualties.

"We anticipate that the number of dead would be high because the bombardment was very intense," Rehan Khattak, a senior government official in the region, told Reuters. "We're trying to get exact figures."

A semi-autonomous Pashtun tribal region, Khyber is a major route for Western supplies trucked from Karachi's port to landlocked Afghanistan through the Khyber Pass. Militants have frequently attacked convoys in the region.
