Sri Lanka says wins civil war, kills rebel leader

Apparently , The Sri Lanka Military has defeated the Tamil Tigers !  Having finally moved in , they have killed Vellupilli Prabhakaran , the leader of the LTTE , now maybe everyone can find out how many civilians have been killed through the whole ordeal !

COLOMBO (Reuters) - Sri Lankan troops won the final battle in one of
the world's most intractable separatist wars, and put the island nation
under government control for the first time since 1983, the military
said.

In the climactic final gun battle, special forces troops killed
Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) leader Vellupillai Prabhakaran
as he tried to flee the war zone in an ambulance early on Monday, state
television reported.

LTTE intelligence chief Pottu Amman and Soosai, head of the "Sea
Tiger" naval wing, were also believed killed, the report said.
Prabhakaran founded the LTTE on a culture of suicide before surrender,
and had sworn he would never be taken alive.

Army commander Lt-Gen. Sarath Fonseka said troops on Monday morning
had finished the task President Mahinda Rajapaksa gave them three years
ago.

"We have liberated the entire country by completely liberating the
north from the terrorists. We have gained full control of LTTE-held
areas," Fonseka announced on state TV.

The end of combat and Prabhakaran's death sent the currency and
stock markets to one-month and seven-month highs respectively by 0900
GMT. They had already surged at the opening in anticipation of the
war's end.

Obama says U.S. can't keep borrowing from China

I think Obama Just woke up from his drunken stuper ! He has just realized that he has sold Most of America to the Chinese ! RIO RANCHO, New Mexico (Reuters) - President Barack Obama raised the prospect on Thursday that China and other nations could stop buying U.S. debt and said the United States needed to tackle its deficit to avoid long-term economic damage.

"The long-term deficit and debt that we have accumulated is unsustainable. We can't keep on just borrowing from China or borrowing from other countries," Obama told a town hall meeting event in New Mexico.

"We have to pay interest on that debt and that means that we're mortgaging our children's future with more and more debt," he said.

China is the single largest holder of U.S. debt and owned $744 billion worth of U.S. government securities at the end of February, the latest month for which data is available, according to the U.S. Treasury.

Obama said the debt situation would create greater economic problems if foreign countries like China lost their appetite for U.S. treasuries.

"What's also true is at some point they're just going to get tired of buying our debt," he said.

"And when that happens, we will really have to raise interest rates to be able to borrow and that will raise interest rates for everybody."

The White House estimated earlier this week the U.S. budget deficit will be $1.84 trillion for the fiscal year that ends September 30.

Obama has pledged to halve the U.S. deficit within four years despite implementing economic stimulus measures that will make it larger in the short term.

New Tang Dynasty Television (NTDTV) recently obtained a list of politically “sensitive” words monitored or censored by China’s largest Internet search engine, Baidu.com, as well as internal documents governing Baidu’s censorship operations. Topping the list is the phrase “Chinese Communist Party.” Phrases such as “withdrawing from the Communist Party” and “disintegrating the Communist Party” are also censored.

On May 4, NTDTV reported 13 categories of politically sensitive words, including those related to “counterrevolutionary” activities, human rights and appeals, the Tiananmen Square Massacre, Falun Gong, ethnic and race relations, military secrets, and organ harvesting.

Under the category of counterrevolutionary activities, censored phrases include “withdrawing from the Communist Party,” “end the rule of the Communist Party,” “dictatorship,” “one-party system,” “human rights in China,” “tyranny,” “ruling government,” and “brainwashing.”

In the Falun Gong category, other than words directly related to the practice, phrases such as “Nine Comentaries,” “The Epoch Times,” “Gao Zhisheng,” and “kidney harvesting from live people” are also on the list.

In addition, there is a special category for words related to the sale of harvested organs. This category shows the Communist Party’s fear of the consequences of harvesting Falun Gong practitioners’ organs while they are still alive.

Mexico drug violence rises on border despite army

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico (Reuters) - Killings between rival drug cartels are rising again in Mexico's most violent city despite a massive army deployment that temporarily slashed the murder rate on the U.S. border.

Drug gangsters in Ciudad Jaurez who used to chase enemies in flashy black jeeps have lowered their profile but are still killing each other as 10,000 troops and federal police patrol the city, across the border from El Paso, Texas.

"Criminals are taking a different approach, using pistols not assault weapons and driving around in small, old cars to reach their rivals, ditching their SUVs," said army spokesman Enrique Torres.

The government says the army has cut drug murders by up to 80 percent since soldiers arrived in March -- but gangs killed 12 people on May 1 in one of the bloodiest days this year.

Mexico's drug war death toll is running at around 2,300 people this year, slightly higher than at the same point in 2008, even as the army makes historic seizures of weapons and cash and arrests top cartel leaders.
Seven people were tied up in black plastic bags and thrown off a bridge in the southern state of Guerrero this month. Police believe the victims may have been alive when they were tossed because the bodies had no bullet wounds or bruises.

An undisclosed country in the Middle East is hosting a human cloning laboratory.

A leading scientist in cloning has told a weekly Dubai-based magazine he has estabished a lab for human cloning.

Dr Panayiotis Zavos, the Cypriot scientist who is trying to clone a human baby for the first time, told Arabian Business the lack of anti-cloning laws in some Middle Eastern countries made the region attractive for cloning research.
Asked if he had a laboratory for cloning in the region, Zavos said: “The answer to that is yes.” He refused to disclose the exact location.

“My next efforts will be taking place in the Middle East because it is a lot easier an environment to work in. The Middle East is where I have to go as an opportunist, as someone who wants to do something. You go into the environment which is conducive to you doing something,” he said.

Dr Zavos added the Middle East’s patriarchal culture coupled with high infertility rates could prove to make it a lucrative region for future cloning.

According to Arabian Business in 2005, the UN General Assembly approved a non-binding declaration banning all forms of human cloning, which was backed by all the GCC countries, except for Oman, which abstained.

SEOUL (Reuters) - Reclusive North Korea, which rattled regional security with a threat to hold a second nuclear test, said on Saturday it would not hold talks with its wealthy South Korean neighbor because it "defiled" Pyongyang's dignity.

The North a day earlier dismissed an overture from the United States for discussions, saying it was useless to talk to the Obama administration because its "hostile policy" left it no choice but to bolster its nuclear deterrent.

The United States sent Stephen Bosworth, its envoy for North Korea, to Asia this week to rein in the secretive communist state after it raised tension with a defiant rocket launch a month ago and then threatened to step up its nuclear weapons program.

"There is no room for talks with the South Korea government group who publicly defiles the name of our republic and denies our entity," the North's KCNA news agency quoted a spokesman with its reunification committee as saying.

White House aide resigns over N.Y. flyover

WASHINGTON, May 8 (Reuters) - A White House military aide who authorized an Air Force flyover of New York that caused panic among some people in the city resigned on Friday.

Louis Caldera said in a resignation letter to President Barack Obama , that the controversy over the mission -- a photo shoot of a jumbo jet used as Air Force One with the Statue of Liberty in the background -- made it impossible for him to lead the White House Military Office.

The flight over lower Manhattan for a photo shoot scared some New Yorkers who remembered the Sept. 11 attacks in 2001 involving hijacked airliners that destroyed the World Trade Center. Some people panicked and evacuated office buildings when the planes flew over.

Caldera had approved the mission. His resignation came on the same day Defense Secretary Robert Gates said in a letter to Senator John McCain that the photo shoot cost U.S. taxpayers as much as $357,000.

Venezuela soldiers seize oil service companies

MARACAIBO, Venezuela (Reuters) - Venezuelan soldiers on Thursday took control of boatyards and other assets belonging to oil service companies in the latest step by socialist President Hugo Chavez to tighten his grip on the industry.

Earlier in the day, Venezuela's legislature approved a law allowing the nationalization of a group of oil service companies. Chavez said the takeovers would quickly start in the Lake Maracaibo oil heartland in the western state of Zulia.

"Tomorrow, we will start to recuperate assets and goods that will now belong to the state, as social property, as they should always have been," Chavez said, adding that thousands of workers would be taken on by state oil company PDVSA.

But members of a Zulia business group that represents local oil firms told Reuters soldiers seized the installations of 20 companies on the eastern side of the lake late on Thursday.

The law makes it easier for the government to later seize assets owned by service giants such as Halliburton and Schlumberger as state oil company PDVSA builds up billions of dollars in debts with contractors amid low oil prices.

The socialist president nationalized oil projects worth billions of dollars two years ago and is now moving against smaller service companies that the government has struggled to pay as crude revenues fell in recent months.

Pirates fire at U.S. Navy ship off Somalia

MANAMA (Reuters) - Pirates have fired small arms weapons at a U.S. Navy supply ship off the coast of Eastern Somalia, the first attack of this kind since last year's surge in pirate attacks, the U.S. Navy said on Thursday.

The USNS Lewis and Clark was chased for about an hour on Wednesday morning by two pirates skiffs, but neither came closer than about one nautical mile to the U.S. vessel, the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet said in a statement.

The small arms fire fell well short of the U.S. ship which speeded up to evade the skiffs.

The USNS Lewis and Clark earlier served as a temporary detention facility for suspected pirates arrested at sea, but its operations are now limited to providing supplies to other U.S. ships operating in the area.

Somali pirates have increased their activities in recent weeks, defying the presence of international navies in the area.

There have been 97 attempted attacks on merchant vessels in the Gulf of Aden in 2009, 27 of which have been successful, according to the U.S. Navy.

In the latest incident, Somali pirates on Thursday seized a small Dutch vessel with at least eight crew in the Gulf of Aden.

North Korea seen readying for new nuclear test

SEOUL (Reuters) - There is increased activity at North Korea's known nuclear test site, a South Korean news report said on Thursday, suggesting Pyongyang is gearing up for a new test as it has threatened in response to tightened U.N. sanctions.

Impoverished North Korea, whose only nuclear test in October 2006 led to U.N. financial and trade sanctions, could be ready to test another nuclear device in a matter of weeks, experts have said.

"Underground nuclear tests are hard to predict and you can't tell when exactly a nuclear test would be possible, but we think the North is ready to conduct a test in a near future if it wants to," the Chosun Ilbo daily quoted a government source as saying.

South Korean authorities are monitoring increased and steady activity at the Phunggye-ri site in the North Hamgyong province where the North conducted the 2006 test, the newspaper said.

The North also appears to have stepped up construction at a new long-range missile launch site in the west that had been expected originally to be completed by the end of the year, the government source was quoted as saying.

Such a move by Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, Mexico's most-wanted fugitive, would mark a turn from the cartel's previous position of largely avoiding violent confrontations in the U.S. -- either with law enforcement officers or rival traffickers.
Police and federal agents in Arizona said they had recently received at least two law enforcement alerts focused on Guzman's reported orders that his smugglers should "use their weapons to defend their loads at all costs."

Guzman is thought to have delivered the message personally in early March, during a three-day gathering of his associates in Sonoita, a Mexican town a few miles south of the Arizona border, according to confidential U.S. intelligence bulletins sent to several state and federal law enforcement officials, who discussed them on the condition of anonymity.

The violence in Juárez has not slowed down even as the city deals with concerns about a swine flu outbreak.

There have been at least 19 homicides already in the month of May in the Juárez area.

Efren Silos Diaz, 28, was found fatally shot in the abdomen at about 1 a.m. Sunday in colonia Nueva Galiana in one of the latest cases, Chihuahua state police said. There were six homicides Saturday and a dozen Friday.

Anti-drug operations also continue in the city.

Last Thursday, the Mexican army raided an indoor marijuana growing operation in a Juárez home.

Soldiers seized 565 marijuana plants grown in an elaborate operation including an irrigation system, chemicals to make the crop grow and a system to dry the harvest, military officials said.

The so-called narco-lab was found by soldiers using drug-sniffing dogs and other equipment, officials said.

Two other homes with indoor farming equipment were also raided.

There were no reported arrests.

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistani forces battled Taliban fighters on Monday as the militants denounced the army and government as U.S. stooges and said a peace pact would end unless the government halted its offensive.

The February pact and spreading Taliban influence have raised alarm in the United States about the ability of nuclear-armed Pakistan -- important in efforts to stabilize Afghanistan -- to stand up to the militants.

In the Buner valley, 100 km (60 miles) northwest of the Pakistani capital, security forces backed by helicopter gunships and artillery attacked militants in three hamlets on Monday, residents and security officials said.

"There's been heavy firing going on since morning. It's very scary. Troops are using heavy artillery and gunships," resident Nasir Khan told Reuters by telephone.

A military spokesman said seven militants, including a commander, were killed. One soldier was killed and three wounded.

The militants were also using about 2,000 villagers as human shields, the military said.

Amid mounting concern at home and abroad, security forces launched an offensive to expel militants from Buner and another district just over a week ago.

About 180 militants have been killed, according to the military, although there has been no independent confirmation of that casualty estimate.

A Taliban spokesman in Swat said elements in the military and the government were trying to sabotage the peace process to please the United States.

China Quake Survivors Face Intimidation, Detention

BEIJING—Survivors of China's devastating earthquake last year face detention and harassment if they protest over collapsed schools, corruption claims and other grievances, Amnesty International said.

While Beijing is pouring billions of dollars into rebuilding towns in southwestern Sichuan province flattened by the May 12 quake, the government also has waged a less public campaign against citizens who blame more than natural destruction for the many schools that collapsed, killing thousands of children, the human rights advocacy group said.

"By unlawfully locking up parents of children who died, the government is creating more misery for people who have said in some cases they lost everything in the Sichuan earthquake," said Roseann Rife of Amnesty in a statement emailed with the report released on Monday.

On the weekend, several grieving parents of Juyuan, where a high school building toppled in the quake, told Reuters their plans to mourn their dead children were stopped by police.

"The police and town officials told us that we should not make such a fuss," said one of the parents, Yang Rengui, whose son died in the school. "Now many parents dare not speak."
