Engineered Cell Engine is Step to Artificial Life

Very Awesome stuff !  A giant Baby step in Science !

theEpochTimes

WASHINGTON—U.S. scientists said they have taken an important step
toward making an artificial life form by making a ribosome -- the
cell's factory.

The ribosome makes the proteins that
carry out key business for all forms of life. Messenger RNA carries
DNA's genetic instructions to a cell's ribosome, which then cooks up
the desired protein. Every living organism from bacteria to humans uses
a ribosome, and they are all strikingly similar.

It is not quite artificial life, but an important step in that direction,
said George Church, a professor of genetics at Harvard Medical School,
who directed the research with a single graduate student.

"If you going to make synthetic life that is anything like current life ...
you have got to have this ... biological machine," Church told
reporters in a telephone briefing.
And it can have important industrial uses, especially for manufacturing drugs and proteins not found in nature.

Church stressed his research has not been published in a scientific journal,
the usual route for reporting such work. He presented it over the
weekend to a seminar of Harvard alumni.

Church's group is not seeking to make life in a test tube, but instead to make designer proteins in lab dishes

Pakistan seeks 'hardcore' Taliban

Good news , but yet to be confirmed , all journalists are banned from the area . I like the fact that they have put a bounty On the higher ups of the Taliban !

BBC

The Pakistani army says it is preparing to flush
"hardcore" Taliban rebels out of the Swat valley after regaining
control of the main city, Mingora.

"We are going after the
leadership and we are going to take care of all the militants in the
valley," spokesman Maj Gen Athar Abbas told the BBC.

Clashes continued outside Mingora but its centre was under control, he said
"We have been able to block the major routes and the entries, exit points of the valley," said Gen Abbas.

"So we are in a better position to flush out, to eliminate the main militants, the hardcore militants of the valley."

Pakistan has increased its reward for the capture of the Taliban leader in Swat, Maulana Fazlullah, to 50m rupees ($600,000).

The radical cleric is believed to be the architect of a two-year uprising in the valley aimed at enforcing Islamic law.

Over 20,000 died in Sri Lanka rebels' defeat: report

Still not the final death toll of civilians , That may never come out ,  unfortunately , I believe this is way more than the amount of the sri lanka military , and tha Tamil Tigers put together !

LONDON (Reuters) - More than 20,000 Tamil civilians were killed in
the final days of Sri Lanka's military operation to defeat Tamil Tigers
rebels, The Times newspaper reported on Friday.

Sri
Lanka's authorities say their forces stopped using heavy weapons on
April 27 in a no-fire zone where an estimated 100,000 Tamil civilians
were sheltered and blame civilian casualties on rebels hiding among the
civilians, the paper said.

Citing
confidential U.N. documents it acquired, The Times said the civilian
death toll in the no-fire zone soared from late April, with around
1,000 civilians killed daily until May 19. That was the day after
Vellupillai Prabhakaran, leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam
(LTTE), was killed.

The final civilian death toll could be more than 20,000, said the paper.

35 militants killed in Afghanistan: U.S. forces

Nice ! The Taliban never seem to do so good with their little ambush's , Maybe they should go back to Goat herding , In Afghanistan , Goat herding is Known as a Sharia compliant prostitution ring !

KABUL (Reuters) - U.S. forces said a U.S. and Afghan army patrol
killed 35 militants in Zabul province, east Afghanistan, when the
patrol's convoy came under attack.

Violence has reached its highest levels in Afghanistan since the U.S.-led overthrow of the Taliban
in 2001, and east Afghanistan, which borders Pakistan, is seeing an
influx of U.S. troops as part of Washington's 21,000 troop expansion.

"The
Afghan-led force was conducting a combat reconnaissance patrol early
this morning, when the convoy came under heavy fire from militants
using small arms and mortar fire," said the statement, released late on
Thursday.

The statement added that
the patrol was being led by the Afghan army, which tends to be
accompanied by U.S. military units tasked with mentoring and supporting
the Afghan soldiers on operations and in battle.

The
incident happened on the same day the U.S. military said American and
Afghan troops killed 29 militants in neighboring Paktika province in a
firefight in Wor Mamay district

Suicide attack, market blasts hit Peshawar

Funny how the Taliban ,who say they are for the people And are against the killing of innocent people ! Are always killing those innocent people , But it is O.K they said they regret it !

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — Militants detonated two bombs in a busy
market and attacked two police checkpoints in northern Pakistan on
Thursday, killing at least 14 people, wounding scores more and testing
the resolve of the government as it takes on the Taliban in the Swat
Valley.

The attacks in Peshawar and Dera Ismail Khan happened
within two hours of each other and a day after an assault on security
forces in the eastern city of Lahore killed around 30 people. That
strike was claimed by the Pakistani Taliban, who warned of further
attacks unless the government called off the Swat offensive.

"Our
targets are security forces, who are killing innocent people in Swat
and other adjoining areas," said Hakimullah Mehsud, a deputy to
Pakistani Taliban chief Baitullah Mehsud. "We regret that some innocent
people were also killed in the Lahore attack, we did not want that."

He
said other attacks were planned for the major cities of Multan,
Rawalpindi, Lahore and the capital, Islamabad, and urged civilians to
flee.

Two bombs in Peshawar were mounted on motorcycles and
exploded within seconds of each other, tearing off walls and shattering
windows of a row of small shops at a popular market, police and
witnesses said.

Mexico arrests mayors, police chiefs in drug war

Excellent ! Mexicos Government and Police force along with the Military have been Crooked for a long time , It is Hilarious to see these public officials rounded up like common criminals !

MORELIA, Mexico (Reuters) - Mexican troops rounded up 10 mayors and
a string of police chiefs on Tuesday suspected of links to drug gangs
in a western state, one of the biggest single corruption sweeps in the
government's drug war.

Soldiers burst into police stations and town halls to arrest 27
public officials in Michoacan, the home state of President Felipe
Calderon and the place he launched his army-led assault on drug cartels
in late 2006.
The officials included a judge and a former police chief who is an
aide to the state governor. The attorney general's office said all were
suspected of links to drug smugglers.

Local officials and police are often bribed or terrorized into
helping the well-armed gangs that move billions of dollars of narcotics
into the United States every year.
The town of Uruapan, where the mayor was arrested on Tuesday, made
headlines early in the drug war in 2006 when hitmen dumped five human
heads on the dance floor of a bar.

Pakistan Taliban Says It Will Stop Fighting in Swat Valley

Really ? The Taliban will stop fighting as to allow people to RETURN to the Area ?  Sure , sounds good to me !  As long as you don't mind being used as a Human Shield !
who the hell are these guys kidding !

VOA
The Taliban says it will stop attacking security forces in the main city of Pakistan's northwestern Swat Valley.

Taliban
Spokesman Muslim Khan says militants will stop their resistance in
Swat's main town of Mingora out of concern for the safety of civilians
and their property.

Khan did not describe the fighting as a
cease-fire. He says the Taliban will not create any obstacles for
civilians wishing to return to the area.
The Pakistani army says about 1,100 militants and at least 63 soldiers have been killed in the offensive.

North Korea fires more rockets, says U.S.

North Korea is Definitely up to no good , the antagonistic stance they are taking will get them results , but
probably not the results they were hoping for !   I'm guessing there will be an onslaught of sanctions leveled against them !

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea, defiant in the face of international
condemnation of its latest nuclear test, fired two short-range missiles
off its east coast on Tuesday and accused the United States of plotting
against its government.

In a move certain to compound tensions in the region, South Korea
said it would join a U.S.-led initiative to intercept ships suspected
of carrying weapons of mass destruction, something Pyongyang has warned
it would consider a declaration of war.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency quoted a government source in Seoul
as saying the North had test-fired one surface-to-air and one
surface-to-ship missile off of its east coast. The missiles had a range
of about 130 km (80 miles).

The North fired off three short-range missiles on Monday.

Monday's nuclear test, the North's second after one in 2006, drew sharp rebuke from regional powers, and U.S. President Barack Obama called Pyongyang's atomic arms program a threat to international security.

Rival's genitals chopped off

Talk about taking matters into your own hands ! The man was way to kind !
the Straitstimes
STRASBOURG - A FRENCH policeman has been charged with 'a barbarous act of torture and mutilation' after he lopped off his wife's lover's genitals with a box cutter, Strasbourg prosecutors said on Monday.

The 43-year-old father-of-five faces a maximum of 30 years in jail and is on suicide watch after handing himself in to his colleagues following Saturday's attack, according to officials involved in the inquiry.

According to prosecutors, the gendarme went over to his wife's lover's house in the eastern town of Reichshoffen, knocked the 54-year-old senseless, dragged him into his garage and emasculated him.

The policeman told neighbours to call an ambulance then surrendered himself to fellow officers.

An initial psychiatric report concluded that he acted in cold blood, and recommended that he be detained in a psychiatric facility. -- AFP

AL Gore you truly are a JACKASS !

Gore, others urge CEOs to back climate change deal
Blah , Blah , Blah !  It is so tiring to hear this same old B.S. , Time after time it has been disproved and every time Al Gore pipes up Again !  If he did not have so much to gain through his business dealings , It might be a different story ! But really , it is just another Liberal , AssMonkey trying to make a Buck at the peoples expense , all the time pushing an agenda very few people believe in !
Al gore You truly are a JACKASS !

COPENHAGEN (AP) — Climate-change heavyweights U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon
and Nobel prize winner Al Gore urged more than 500 business leaders on
Sunday to lend their corporate muscle to reaching a global deal on
reducing greenhouse gases.

The CEOs of PepsiCo, Nestle, BP and
other of the world's major businesses began meeting in Copenhagen,
where politicians will gather in December to negotiate a new
U.N.-brokered climate treaty.

Despite the global financial
crisis, both Ban and Gore said there was no time for delay in hashing
out the specifics of how to cut greenhouse gases that contribute to
warming the planet.

"We have to do it this year. Not next year.
This year," Gore said. "The clock is ticking, because Mother Nature
does not do bailouts."

The three-day World Business Summit on
Climate Change is a precursor to the negotiations to determine what
will succeed the Kyoto climate treaty that expires in 2012.

"Continuing
to pour trillions of dollars into fossil-fuel subsidies is like
investing in subprime real estate," Ban said. "Our carbon-based
infrastructure is like a toxic asset that threatens the portfolio of
global goods, from public health to food security."

A new global
warming treaty would build on the Kyoto treaty's mixed success in
requiring that 37 industrialized nations reduce greenhouse gas
emissions an average of 5 percent below 1990 levels by 2012.
