El Paso -- The shooting death of a U.S. Border Patrol agent west of San Diego Thursday night has produced strong reaction nationally and locally.

Border Patrol Agent Robert Rosas, 30, died Thursday in the Campo, Calif., region near the U.S.-Mexico border after receiving multiple gunshots, Border Patrol Agent Mark Endicott said Friday.

He was with the Border Patrol for three years and is survived by his wife and two young children. Funeral services had not been set.

In a telephone interview, Endicott said the U.S. government also called on Mexican officials to help find the person or persons who killed the agent.

He said Rosas, a native of El Centro, Calif., and other agents, were tracking suspicious activity Thursday night near the international boundary.

"At one point, the other agents lost radio contact with Agent Rosas, and then they found him lying on the ground injured with multiple gunshot wounds," said Endicott, a spokesman for the Border Patrol in Chula Vista, Calif. "The area where he was found is near the border fence."

Border Patrol officials do not know yet whether Rosas had encountered drug smugglers or human-traffickers.
