Taliban claim no ties to Pakistan

Taqiya, lies, Denial,B.S., whatever you would like to call it that's what this is.

Of course the Taliban is going to say this, just like Pakistan denies it; anything to divert eyes away from the reality of what is going on.

If they were to admit to it Pakistan would lose money and the Taliban would be having a bigger fight on their hands when the U.S. finally says the gloves are off and starts to go after all the targets they want inside Pakistan.

The Taliban are rejecting claims that they or any of their allies have ties to the Pakistani government.

The insurgent group said in a statement on Tuesday that it had no bases in Pakistan.

The claim runs contrary to US and international assertions that the Taliban retain numerous safe havens and bases in Pakistan's tribal areas, used to stage attacks into neighbouring Afghanistan.

The Taliban also reject US charges that the Haqqani network, a key affiliate, has ties to Pakistan's intelligence service.

The group says Haqqani network founder Jalaluddin Haqqani is a key member of the Taliban leadership.

Iran says 2 downed spy planes were US-operated

Iran says it has determined that two pilotless spy planes it claims to have downed were operated by the United States. An Iranian official says authorities will publicly display them.

The Revolutionary Guard's air force said earlier this month that it shot down two highly advanced spy planes that had violated Iranian airspace. It provided no proof.

The U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet, which is based in the Gulf, said at the time that it had no reports of any aircraft downed recently.

A former Russian counterterrorism agent testified Tuesday that an Islamic charity that once had its U.S. headquarters in Oregon was financing Islamic fighters battling the Russian Army in the breakaway republic of Chechnya.

However, under cross-examination, Col. Sergey Ignatchenko acknowledged that the names he had of Al-Haramain Islamic Foundation officials tied to terrorism did not include defendant Pete Seda, also known as Pirouz Sedaghaty.

"I never knew about him, I never heard about him," he said.

Ignatchenko, now head of communications for the Russian Federal Security Service, testified via live video feed from former KGB headquarters in Moscow as a prosecution witness in the U.S. District Court sentencing of Seda. His remarks were interpreted by a translator in court.

Ignatchenko testified that his agency had information that Al-Haramain financed a terrorist training camp in Chechnya and was in contact with the leaders of Muslim fighters but did not know the specific source of the funds...


Judge Michael Hogan postponed sentencing, saying he needed a couple weeks to prepare a written response to legal issues, particularly whether to apply the so-called terrorism enhancement that would give Seda the maximum eight years in prison for his convictions for tax fraud and conspiracy.

Though Seda has never been charged with terrorism, prosecutors are seeking the maximum sentence of eight years in prison by offering evidence that Seda intended the money to support guerrillas fighting against a country with which the United State was at peace.

(Reuters) - Mid-level Taliban insurgency commanders do not believe their leaders have begun tentative peace talks with the Afghan government, with many vowing on Friday not to give up the fight after nearly 10 years of war.

NATO and Afghan officials have confirmed preliminary contacts between President Hamid Karzai's government and the Taliban, although doubt surrounds when those contacts were made, who they were made with and what, if any, progress was made.

Karzai is pushing a negotiated settlement to the conflict and has launched a High Peace Council which has said it is prepared to offer concessions to bring insurgents to the table, although Kabul and Washington are adamant they must renounce violence.

However, insurgency commanders from across Afghanistan indicated they were not involved in the initial contacts.

"No one has come so far and sat with the government and there is no hope that the Taliban will come and negotiate with the government," said Abdullah Nasrat, the Taliban commander for Girishk district in southern Helmand province, one of the Taliban's traditional strongholds.

NEW YORK - An imam who pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI during the investigation into a suicide bomb plot against New York City subway stations has been deported.

The lawyer for Ahmad Afzali (AKH'-mahd ahf-ZAH'-lee) says Afzali and his wife left on a Saudi Arabian Airlines flight to Jeddah on Monday afternoon. Two immigration agents accompanied him to the plane to ensure he got on. Afzali's lawyer says some of Afzali's last words on U.S. ground were: God bless America.'

Afzali's wife Fatima got a position teaching English in Saudi Arabia. Afzali isn't quite sure what he's going to do there. The Afghanistan-born imam has lived most of his life in Queens.

He was sentenced April 15 to time served and deportation. Najibullah Zazi pleaded guilty in plot disrupted by federal and NYPD officials.
