Taliban militants attacked a security checkpost in the northwestern Orakzai tribal region, killing one paramilitary soldier and wounding five, local officials said.

In a retaliatory attack, eight militants were killed and 13 wounded.

There was no independent confirmation of the report. The Taliban often dispute official casualty figures.

Orakzai is one of the most lawless areas in Pakistan’s northwest tribal region, which is made up of seven districts near the Afghan border.

A Brooklyn, N.Y., teen admitted to police that she poured acid on a classmate’s head in hopes to burn the victim’s eyes out, reported the New York Post.

Zhanna Smsarian, 16, allegedly sat behind the victim, Albina Eshimbaeva, 15, in chemistry class at Fort Hamilton High School on Wednesday and allegedly poured a bottle of diluted hydrochloric acid over Eshimbaeva’s head, the Post reported. Classmates said the girls have a history of bad blood.

Once poured, the acid dripped down the girl’s head and into her eyes. But the quick-thinking teacher doused the girl’s eyes with water and rushed her to Staten Island Hospital’s burn unit, where staffers said the girl would have been blind if not for the teacher’s reaction.

Agents are investigating a purported plot to detonate explosives somewhere in the United States, an assistant U.S. attorney general says after three men were arrested in Colorado and New York.
Reporting from Washington - Authorities today pressed an urgent investigation into whether a Denver-area airport shuttle driver, his father and associates in New York were part of the first operational Al Qaeda-affiliated terrorist plot on U.S. soil since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, and what the alleged targets might have been.

Najibullah Zazi, 24, an Afghan emigre, and his father, Mohammed Wali Zazi, 53, were arrested late Saturday at their town house in the Denver suburb of Aurora. They had undergone three days of questioning by the FBI but had stopped cooperating, authorities said. Also arrested was Ahmad Wais Afzali, 37, of Flushing, N.Y., who was described in court documents as an informant for the New York Police Department.

All three were charged with making false statements to federal agents in an ongoing terrorism investigation and were to appear in court Monday. Court documents said Afzali may have tried to tip off the younger Zazi that he was under investigation. All are either naturalized U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents from Afghanistan.

While in New York this month, Zazi's vehicle was pulled over and searched. Authorities also raided three apartments in Queens and questioned residents, including an Afghan immigrant who grew up with Zazi.

FBI agents alleged in court documents today that Zazi had admitted receiving weapons and explosives training from Al Qaeda operatives in Pakistan last year. In court documents and interviews, they also alleged that a handwritten recipe for homemade explosives was found on Zazi's laptop computer, and said it would have produced a bomb of the same size and type used in the deadly 2005 attacks on London's subways and buses. Authorities said they had seized nine new backpacks during last week's raids in New York.

BERLIN (Reuters) - Militant Islamist group al Qaeda threatened Germany with attacks for the second time this weekend in an online video criticizing the country for its deployment of troops in Afghanistan, authorities said on Sunday.

The interior ministry identified al Qaeda's messenger in the latest video as Bekkay Harrach, a German-Moroccan who also appeared in a separate clip on Friday warning Germany faced a "rude awakening" if it did not end its "war" in Afghanistan.

Television footage showed Harrach, who is 32 according to German media, wearing a mask in the latest video.

Harrach was clean shaven and wearing a suit and tie in the previous recording in which he directly addressed German Chancellor Angela Merkel, saying that attacks could follow Germany's federal election on September 27.

"In a democracy, only the people can order its soldiers home," Harrach said in German in the first video.

Reporting from Nairobi, Kenya - In swift retaliation for the U.S. killing this week of a suspected Al Qaeda fugitive in Somalia, insurgents attacked the main African Union peacekeeping base in Mogadishu with twin truck bombs Thursday, killing at least nine people, including four AU soldiers.

Suicide bombers attempted to infiltrate the heavily guarded seaside base by impersonating U.N. personnel, AU officials said.

Among the wounded were unidentified senior Somali government officials, who were visiting the base, and the newly arrived African Union force commander, Ugandan Maj. Gen. Nathan Mugisha, who suffered minor injuries, AU and government officials said.

Five of the dead appeared to be Somalis, but AU officials said they did not yet know whether they were civilians or assailants. Nine soldiers were evacuated to Nairobi for treatment, AU spokesman Maj. Barigye Ba-Hoku said.

Leaders of the hard-line Somali Islamist group Shabab claimed responsibility, saying the attack was a response to the U.S. strike.
