Wearing A Burqa In Italy Could Be Costly

“We think people who come to this country have to live by the rules that are shared by everyone,”

While the Belgium Parliament debates a ban on full Muslim veils, a town in northern Italy has already put a ban into practice, fining a woman 500 Euros – more than $650 -- this week for wearing a burqa in public.

“The fine is meant to be expensive; people should know they are risking a big fine,” the Assessor for Public Safety in the city of Novara, Mauro Franzinelli, told Fox News.

Municipal police in Novara, in the northern Piedmont region, fined the Tunisian woman for challenging the city ordinance.

Franzinelli, who helped the mayor of Novara draft the anti-burqa ordinance in January, said immigrants have got to learn to adapt to their new homes. “We think people who come to this country have to live by the rules that are shared by everyone,” he told Fox.

A 1975 anti-terrorism law prohibits people, as a question of public safety, from wearing masks, full motorcycle helmets or other clothing in public places that would keep them from being identified. But courts have made some exceptions for religious reasons, leading some towns in Italy to try to get rid of the loopholes.

In Belgium, the lower house of Parliament recently passed legislation prohibiting full veils in public, and the measure is now scheduled to go to the Senate.
