A private suborbital spaceship built for the space tourism firm Virgin Galactic made its first flight with a crew onboard Thursday as it soared over California's Mojave Desert beneath its enormous mothership.

The commercial spaceliner – called VSS Enterprise, one of the company's fleet of SpaceShipTwo spacecraft – did not try to reach space in the test flight. Instead, it stayed firmly attached to its WhiteKnightTwo VMS Eve mothership.

The two crewmembers riding onboard VSS Enterprise evaluated all of the spacecraft's systems and functions during the 6-hour, 12-minute flight, Virgin Galactic officials said in a statement. "Objectives achieved," Virgin Galactic officials said in a statement on the company's website. "Congratulations to the whole team!"

Three other crewmembers flew aboard the Eve mothership, which is designed to carry SpaceShipTwo to an altitude above 50,000 feet (15,240 meters) before the spacecraft drops and fires its hybrid rocket motor to launch into suborbital space.

(Reuters) - Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro took his warning of impending nuclear war to Cuba's Foreign Ministry on Friday, where he explained the reasons for his dire prediction in his fifth public appearance in 10 days.

Castro's sudden re-emergence after four years in seclusion for health reasons has raised questions about his intentions, but his message has been consistent -- a devastating war is at hand if the United States, in alliance with Israel, tries to enforce international sanctions against Iran for its nuclear activities.

He also has predicted the United States will attack North Korea.

"The United States finds itself now in an unsolvable dilemma (in the Middle East). It cannot get out, nor can it stay," Castro told 115 ambassadors, who listened with rapt attention.

"It won't get out of that situation through diplomacy, but through the power of its arms," he said, pointing his finger in the air and pontificating at length as in the old days.

That's right old man , We like to kick the shit out of the enemy !

Castro, 83, spoke for more than an hour as he sat in front of the ambassadors. He looked fit, relaxed and fully in charge as he took questions and read numerous news reports to back up his position.

Pakistan army accused of extrajudicial killings in Swat

The Pakistani army has carried out 238 extrajudicial killings of people in the Swat Valley since September last year, says a report from Human Rights Watch.

It documents cases where members of the army allegedly took away Taliban suspects, who were later found dead, their bodies riddled with bullets.

A military spokesman denied the army had engaged in extrajudicial killings.

The army said it had driven insurgents from Swat following a massive offensive against them last year.

Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni has said he will crush Somalia's al-Shabab over Sunday's deadly Kampala blasts which killed 74 people.

He said he wanted to send up to 20,000 troops to Somalia to "eliminate" the hardline Islamist group.

Al-Shabab has said it was behind the twin attacks on people watching the World Cup final because Ugandan troops are supporting the Somali government.

Mr Museveni said other countries would now send troops to Mogadishu.

"I am optimistic that these numbers will be raised now - especially now - because these people have provoked the world more than before. And I can assure you they have invited a lot of problems for themselves," he told journalists in Uganda.

CAIRO — The man who pleaded guilty to carrying out the attempted Times Square car bombing vowed in a video recorded before the failed attack that he would strike the U.S. to avenge the deaths of Muslims killed by American forces.

The Dubai-based television station Al-Arabiya broadcast excerpts Wednesday of a 40-minute video featuring Faisal Shahzad that it said was released by the Pakistani Taliban. The station did not say how it got hold of the video.

In excerpts aired on Al-Arabiya, Shahzad is sitting on the ground in a black turban and military fatigues, with a gun next to him as he recites verses from the Quran.

He says he will carry out a "revenge attack" against the U.S. to avenge the deaths of Muslims killed in Afghanistan and Pakistan by the U.S., and that he hopes his actions will touch the hearts of Muslims.

Al-Arabiya said the full tape shows Shahzad meeting with a prominent Pakistani Taliban figure, Faqir Mohammed, the deputy leader of Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, along the Afghan border.

Shahzad was arrested days after the failed May 1 bombing in Times Square.

Could the NSA's new "Perfect Citizen" actually be used for spying on every citizen in the U.S.?

The name sounds like an action movie -- the heroic vigilante chases down the bad guys to aid his country and prevent a nuclear armageddon. It also sounds like the worst possible name for a government program intended to protect citizens, not spy on them.

The NSA's new cyber-security program Perfect Citizen will monitor nuclear power plants, train stations, and the electric power grid to safeguard against cyber-assaults.

And as the Wall Street Journal reported, the new program is intended to monitor cyber-terrorist threats and "would rely on a set of sensors deployed in computer networks for critical infrastructure that would be triggered by unusual activity suggesting an impending cyber attack."

According to that report, Raytheon was awarded a $100M contract to develop Perfect Citizen. (Raytheon declined to comment to FoxNews.com, as did the NSA other than describing Perfect Citizen in an official statement as a "research and risk-assessment" project that does not use sensors.)

How would such a system work? Why do experts fear it could be turned against us? And should the government really be in the business of installing sensors on the private power grid and at nuclear plants owned by private companies?

Phantom Eye hydrogen-powered spy plane unveiled

Boeing has unveiled its unmanned hydrogen-powered spy plane which can fly non-stop for up to four days.

The high-altitude plane, called Phantom Eye, will remain aloft at 20,000m (65,000ft), according to the company.

The demonstrator will be shipped to Nasa's Dryden Flight Research Center in California later this summer to prepare for its first flight in early 2011.

Boeing says the aircraft could eventually carry out "persistent intelligence and surveillance".

It is a product of the company's secretive Phantom Works research and development arm.

Boeing says the aircraft is capable of long endurance flights because of its "lighter" and "more powerful" hydrogen fuel system.

"We flew Condor [the company's previous reconnaissance drone] for 60 hours in 1989 on regular jet fuel, and that was the maximum," said Chris Haddox from Boeing Phantom Works. "Now we're talking 96 hours."

France's lower house of parliament has overwhelmingly approved a bill that would ban wearing the Islamic full veil in public.

There were 335 votes for the bill and only one against in the 557-seat National Assembly.

It must now be ratified by the Senate in September to become law.

The ban has strong public support but critics point out that only a tiny minority of French Muslims wear the full veil.

Many of the opposition Socialists, who originally wanted the ban limited only to public buildings, abstained from voting after coming under pressure from feminist supporters of the bill.

President Nicolas Sarkozy has backed the ban as part of a wider debate on French identity but critics say the government is pandering to far-right voters.

After the vote, Justice Minister Michele Alliot-Marie said it was a victory for democracy and for French values.

At least 64 people have died in two blasts in the Ugandan capital, Kampala.

Some 70 others were injured by the explosions, which hit a rugby club and an Ethiopian restaurant as football fans watched the World Cup final.

Police were investigating whether the blasts were suicide bombings, and blamed Somalia's al-Shabab militants.

Ugandan peacekeepers operate in Mogadishu, Somalia, and al-Shabab - linked to al-Qaeda - has threatened to hit Kampala in the past.

Yemen has arrested eight suspected al-Qaeda fighters, including a Saudi fugitive, accused of plotting attacks on security installations in Yemen, the defence ministry has said.

Sunday's arrests came days after two suspected members of the same al-Qaeda cell were detained after a raid on a house in Hadramout province that sparked clashes in which three soldiers were killed.

"Two al-Qaeda elements were arrested during a raid on a house where cell members were hiding, and eight others were caught in the following days," the ministry said on its website.

A security official said the group arrested in Hadramout, east of the capital Sanaa, was accused of plotting attacks on security and other vital installations in the eastern province, but did not identify specific targets.

The defence ministry identified the Saudi who was arrested as Abdullah Faraj Mohamed Mahmoud al-Jawbar, who is on a list of 85 Saudis wanted by Riyadh.

Guatemala nabs cocaine-stuffed submarine in Pacific

(Reuters) - Guatemala's navy captured a makeshift submarine loaded with five metric tons of cocaine bound for the United States, the Guatemalan military said on Sunday.

The navy, which was working with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration on the operation, stopped the 55-foot (17-meter) vessel on Friday off Guatemala's Pacific coast and arrested four Colombian men on board.

"There was a sleeping compartment, another (compartment) for the engine, and a third for cargo which was full of cocaine," armed forces spokesman Byron Gutierrez told a news conference.

The four men were taken into custody by DEA agents.

Drug cartels ship hundreds of metric tons of cocaine from Latin America to the United States every year.

In October 2009, a similar submersible was found 108 miles off the Guatemalan coast, packed with 10 metric tons of cocaine.

Body remains found on wheels of plane in Riyadh

(Reuters) - Workers at Riyadh airport found the remains of a body on the tires of a plane which arrived from Beirut early Saturday, an airport source in Beirut said.

The source said some passengers on the Saudi Arabian airline Nas Air flight had reported seeing a man with a backpack running toward the plane shortly before it took off from Beirut.

They told the pilot what they had seen, the source said, but the flight continued to Saudi Arabia and the body was only discovered after the plane had landed and been inspected.

Saudi and Lebanese officials were trying to establish the identity of the dead person, the source said.

4 suspects killed, 5 civilians wounded in clash between police, gunmen in Mexican border state

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Four suspects have been killed in a shootout with police in the Mexican border state of Coahuila and five civilian bystanders have been wounded.

Two of the bystanders are in serious condition, while three are listed as stable at local hospitals.

The state attorney general's office said Friday the wounded people were traveling on the highway near the city of Torreon at the time of the confrontation.

The clash occurred late Thursday in a region where drug gangs have been active. The police came under attack as they were carrying out an investigation.

The office says three pistols and an assault rifle were seized at the scene. More than 22,700 people have been killed in drug-related violence in Mexico since late 2006.

Pakistan (Reuters) - A suicide bomber on a motorbike killed at least 65 people, including women and children, in an attack in a volatile Pashtun region on the Afghan border on Friday, officials said.

The bomber blew himself up as hundreds of people were gathered around the office of a senior government official in Pakistan's northwestern Mohmand region, where security forces have stepped up attacks on Taliban militants in recent weeks.

The attacker apparently targeted tribal elders who had come to the office of Rasool Khan, assistant political agent of Mohmand, for a meeting.

"Now the death toll is 65. Around 112 people have been wounded," Khan told Reuters.

Among the wounded were several people displaced by fighting between security forces and militants, who were collecting relief goods near the blast site. Residents said five children, aged between 5 and 10, and several women were among dead.
